SPEECH AND DRAMA

THE FOLLOWING RULES APPLY TO BOTH THE SENIOR & JUNIOR SECTIONS

 (To be read in conjunction with the Main Festival Rules)

  1. The IWMDDF has entered into an agreement with the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS). This means that entrants do not have to seek copyright permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items performed to a time limit of 10 minutes.
  2. Solo dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for copyright indemnity and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character.
  3. Duologues and group dramatic activity are not covered by this agreement and copyright for these items should be sought by performers at the time of entry.
  4. Team is defined as between 4 and 15 persons in total, unless otherwise stated; e.g. any number allowed in Classes 439, 440, 441, 442, 443 and 495 but Health & Safety considerations must prevail.
  5. No competitor may compete more than once in any SOLO Class.
  6. Time Limits must be strictly adhered to or the performance will be stopped.
  7. Anything of an adult or explicit nature should be brought to the attention of a member of the Speech & Drama Committee as soon as is practicable or, failing that, to the Table Steward or Adjudicator on the day, prior to performance. The Committee reserves the right to stop a performance if deemed offensive.
  8. Curtained background – where provided – will be used for all Classes.
  9. Essential hand props are permitted in all Classes except Miming, where they are prohibited.
  10. In the Miming Classes, a short sub-title may be given.
  11. In the Miming Classes, background music may be used as a stimulus.
  12. Costume is not allowed in the Miming Classes.
  13. Costume is optional in Drama and Duologue Classes.
  14. Plays: The Title, Type and Period of the play (e.g. Comedy, Drama etc. and Modern, Restoration etc.) along with the performance time must be stated on the Entry Form.
  15. In the Drama and Senior Duologue Classes, a limit of 5 minutes is allowed for setting the stage after it has been cleared by the previous team.

 

JUNIOR SECTION

1. In all Solo speaking, competitors will be judged on the test pieces only. No own choice pieces will be required.

  1. The Junior section is open to all competitors aged 18 and under on September 1st  2022

3. For all Junior Solo Classes, the Entrance Fee is £6.00, unless otherwise stated. Junior pairs classes Entry fee is £8

COMPETITIVE SPECIAL DRAMA / MOVEMENT (See notes below)

496       OWN CHOICE

  1. COMPETITIVE Class for groups with learning difficulties, to showcase their performance in front of an encouraging Adjudicator and audience. Competitors will receive a Certificate of Performance and marks will be awarded.
  2. Groups may comprise between 4 and 15 persons of any age and, if desired, may include a minority of supporters without learning difficulties. They may perform any type of drama and/or movement.
  3. Backing track/music is allowed with or without vocals. Live music is also permitted.
  4. At the time of publication, the venue for this Class is not yet determined and could be either Ryde, Newport or Shanklin.

Entrance Fee: £15 per group.
